Capture-Recapture

Home Up

This lesson has students work with ratios in a "real world" situation to decide the population of a lake of fish.

Students take samples of fish (white beans) from their lake (a cup or baggy), tag them by replacing them with red beans.  The students record the number of captured fish, tagged fish, and untagged fish in each sample.  The one fact the students know as they sample is the number of tagged fish in the lake.  From this fact the students study their ratio of tagged fish to total fish and predict the population of the lake.
