Students love to study patterns.  All the patterns in the Can You See the Pattern More Than One Way are linear patterns.  Again using tiles the students can develop patterns, explain how they are changing, and begin to predict what other pictures will look like.  If the patterns are changing in one direction they are linear patterns.  If the pattern is changing in two directions, the patterns are quadratic.

The activity will have students

bulletbuild patterns,
bulletdescribe how they are changing geometrically,
bulletcollect tables,
bulletdescribe how the tables are changing,
bulletgraph the data,
bulletdescribe how the graph is changing,
bulletand then look for a relationship between the model, the table, and the graph.
bulletFinally students will learn to write nth terms for each pattern from what they have studied.
