Although the TI-83 does not have the ability to solve algebraic equations and
to manipulate algebraic expressions, it does contain a solver command.
To access the solver press the Math Key and move to choice
0: Solver.
Then press enter
Let's suppose you want to solve the cubic equation
.
You will need to convert this to an equation where you are solving for a
zero: . Type
this equation using the line eqn: 0=.
To solve this equation for the zeros you need to tell the
calculator to solve it by pressing ALPHA ENTER
The calculator will look for the zero in the boundary set up
on this screen. If you know the approximate location for a zero you
can type this in between the braces. Otherwise, place the cursor on
the line x= and press ALPHA ENTER.
By checking the graph of this equation you can see there is
only one zero in the domain from
.
We know this is the behavior of the function over the entire domain
since is always positive
and therefore the function is always increasing.
If it is necessary to change the boundary you can type in
the boundary you want to look in for a zero.
