The derivative of a function is defined as

You can use your TI-83 or TI-89 to also perform a numerical derivative.  This means the calculator can perform an algorithm that will find you an approximation for the slope of the function at a specific point on the function.

The TI-89 can also find the derivative for a function algebraically and give your the derivative function.
