bulletLesson Objective:  Students will

estimate how many candies fit in a container,
find the exact number of candies that fit in the same container, and
compare the two quantities with each other.

 

bulletMaterials needed:     Several pill container from a local pharmacy
                                    A large bag of Skittles
                                    One TI-73 for each pair of students
                                    Activity Sheet

                

bulletProcedure:     Place students into groups of 4 students to work together to collect data.

                                   Distribute a few skittles to each group of students.  Ask students to use the few skittles you have given them to estimate the number of skittles that will fit in each pill container.  Have student record the data on their activity sheet.

                                    Distribute additional skittles so students can also record the exact number of skittles that will fit in each pill container.  Have student record the data in the chart.
