
The Max Sobel
Outstanding Mathematics Educator
Award
Originally named the AMTNJ Outstanding Mathematics Educator Award, this was
first awarded in 1990 to Max Sobel. who soon became the model for subsequent
choices. in 1993, the name was changed to the Max Sobel Outstanding Mathematics
Educator Award. Using Max Sobel and the other awardees as models, the AMTNJ
Executive Council annually selects a New Jersey mathematics educator who has
rendered distinguished services to AMTNJ and New Jersey mathematics education
over a long span of years. Past awardees include Max SobeL Evan Maletsky, Mary
Froustet. David Glatzer, Janet Caldwell, Karen Sanderson, Gloria Sanok, Joe
Rosenstein Steve Krulik, Joyce Glatzer, and Paul Lawrence.

Educator Award Presented to James Rahn

Jim Rahn
began teaching mathematics in 1971 and is currently a mathematics teacher at
Southern Regional High School in Manahawkin, New Jersey. Noted for his
distinguishing contributions to mathematics education throughout New Jersey and
the nation, Jim in many ways continues to positively influence both students and
fellow educators. Jim is a past president of the Association of Mathematics
Teachers of New Jersey and a winner of the Presidential Award for Excellence in
Mathematics. Jun has presented at numerous national, state, and regional
conferences. He has been a staff member and speaker at the Rutgers New Teachers’
and the Experienced Teachers’ Institutes as well as a consultant for Key
Curriculum Press. In 1995, Jim was the Program Co-Chairperson for the NCTM
Eastern Regional Conference and is currently the General Co-Chairperson for this
year’s conference. The Executive Council of the Association of Mathematics
Teachers of New Jersey is proud to honor Jim Rahn as the 2001 Max Sobel
Outstanding Mathematics Educator.
