After studying similarity for several weeks
the students were each given a small 1inch by 1 inch square of a
cartoon. Each student was also given a 5 inch by 5 inch piece of
paper. After griding the two squares into 9 boxes the students then
copied each of the nine sections of the small print onto the larger piece of
paper. |
 |
Each piece the students received also was
labeled with a coordinate such as (1,1) to (10,10). This number
corresponded to the position of the student's puzzle piece in the complete
puzzle.

As students completed the enlargement of
their picture they carried it to the side of the room where several students
were given the task of re-assembling the picture on the wall. There
was a lot of interest to see what the picture would make. As the
puzzle was -re-assembled the students saw there picture emerge. Each
of my three classes had different pictures. |
 |
At the conclusion of the enlarging process
the students could see that the area of the picture had grown by 25 times
when the dimensions of the picture has each been increased by a factor of
5. This was a second project the students had completed using
similarity. |
