During the school year the students have been working on various geometric explorations. Some the activities have given the students an opportunity to study different fractals. One of the explorations had the students discover a pattern in the Tower of Hanoi Puzzle.
The fractal cards, done by Mr. Rahn, show the students the same pattern they had seen on the Tower of Hanoi puzzle. But this time the number pattern appeared on the pop-up parts of the card. After cutting out the various stages and reverse folding the pop-up part, the students attached the cards to color index paper.
Place pattern one on the center of a sheet of paper. Fold the paper along the horizontal line in the center of the paper. Cut along the line perpendicular to the fold along the longest line. Stop at the end of the line segment. Fold the paper again along the next horizontal line. Again cut along the next longest line. Repeat until this pattern two more times. The fractal card should appear. Place pattern two on the center of a sheet of paper. Fold the paper along the thin horizontal line in the center of the paper. Cut along the line perpendicular to the fold along the longest line. Stop at the end of the line segment. Fold the paper again along the next thin horizontal line. Again cut along the next longest line. Repeat until this pattern two more times. The fractal card should appear. |
