This lesson incorporates material known as
Question Quest, a set of material that teaches students how to write better
and more powerful responses to open ended questions. At the high school
level material is available in
four levels. There are four basic components to each book:
 | Invite the students to write,
An activity, where students are able to make some observations and write
down what they think.
|
 | You be the Judge,
An activity, where students first solve an open ended question, then then
after discussing the question as a class, then judge six authentic student
samples. The students try to put into two categories: the three best and
the three worst and support why.
|
 | You be the Teacher, |
An activity, where students again first solve another open ended question,
and then are taught how to use a rubric to score the question. The
students then try to score several authentic student samples using the rubric.
 | You be Yourself. |
This final activity provides students with additional open ended questions
and short responses to complete. The teacher can score these questions
with the given rubric.
